Harmful Things Dogs Can Chew or Eat

Most of us know that chocolate is a dangerous thing for our dogs to eat. I know that from personal experience. Somehow our dog managed to get on top of something and get into a box of chocolates. Never underestimate a dog's ability to get on top or into something. Fortunately we got him to the Vet in time. Yes, it cost $$$. The old saying of an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure sure rings true. I recently read an article in my AKC newsletter by Dr. Jerry Klein, CVO entitled "Protect Your Dog From These Top 10 Pet Poisons" which you can read here, https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/vets-corner/dogs-and-poison/. It was surprising to see that over the counter medications accounted for about 20% of calls to the Animal Poison Control Center and prescription medications accounted for about 17.5%. Medications may be in childproof containers but not dog proof. Dr. Klein lists things you can do to poison proof your home. It's not just things inside your home either. Toxins can be outside too such as certain plants and things we use to control insects and weeds. Someone near me has wisteria growing in their yard. It's beautiful but it's poisonous. Every part of it is poisonous to humans and it is highly toxic to pets. Just be mindful of your dog's play area and what is there. You can find lists from the ASPCA of toxic and nontoxic plants, https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants. I hope you find this helpful. If you think your pet has ingested something harmful don't hesitate to call your Vet. With chocolate time is of the essence. We know that. Spring is here. The weather is warmer. Flowers are blooming. It's time to go out and enjoy it with your dog.

Photo Tip of the Day:

Do you have problems getting your dog's attention when you want them to look at the camera? How about your cat? Try some noises or squeaks to get their attention. Visual things like wand toys work well with cats. Be careful not to do these too much as your pet will become used to the noises and start to ignore them. Use them when you are ready to get that shot.
